I am interested in taking the genre of wood firing as I have learned it in Japan, and pushing it in new directions; to be conscious of material and form as the relate to the effects of loading and firing. Recently, I have been experimenting with the concept of tension, ie: the archaic quality of organic clay and crusty, rough textures of the firing in tension with forms that may be faceted, sharp edged and geometric. The challenge is to have the tension strengthen those different aspects of the work so that they play off each other, rather than compete with each other.
Jeff exhibits nationally and internationally and has work in numerous public and private collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Brooklyn Museum , the Everson Museum of Art and Kajima International.
